Even a sage handler has only but so much finesse against the distractions. Bill closes his mind's hands around Verity's ever-so-sensitive spark, and it suddenly becomes that much more pliable. It can't hear the call of all the other forces at work: the shifting gravity and magnetism of the strange interdimensional place; the call of the thunderclouds and the air saturated with electrical potential. Other magicks, sometimes from other spellcasters can even interfere, on occasion. It only hears Verity, for the time being.
