She shakes her head. "Magic isn't inherently evil, but according to old legends, kings tried to use wizards as pawns in their political games. Eventually, the wizards grew tired of it and after one terrifying act of defiance went into hiding. Magic is feared because of the power it holds - and the fact that no one knows anything about how or why it works."

The technology bit requires more explanation and she crosses her arms slowly to give herself a few extra seconds. "Advanced technology is like magic in that respect - it's powerful in ways that aren't understood. Explaining things to one person slowly would be fine, but how do you explain even the most rudimentary of topics - like phones - to a group of people who have no means of communication besides letters or speaking face-to-face?" It's not a thing most people think about, but Amelia's done days of research trying to figure all of this out.
