A question of safety

This Winter has been a harsh one, and the Nexus' resident rogue shows signs of it. Where before Amelia had been comfortable enough to walk about the Nexus with relatively few weapons on her person, she now carries her full armory every time she steps out of the inn she currently calls home. For weeks she's been pondering how to tackle a problem on her own. Now she's come to the Forum to seek advice, as anyone who's been here long enough usually does.

"I've had many thoughts and worries relating to the safety of myself and others after certain events in the last several weeks." Her lips draw into a thin line and she crosses her arm in front of her chest. That's enough context for everyone who might answer, surely. "What do you do to feel safe? Or, rather, when your safety is threatened, how do you respond?"

"Taking care of myself is easy. I am but one person and therefore easy to look after. Survival is an instinct that I know well - one that doesn't require my every attention." Tread carefully, rogue, or you'll end up cursed again.

"I'm not suggesting that I will fall so far into the role of guardian as to lose sight of my own well-being. What I am saying is that sometimes the best things in life our outside of ourselves. A man can be an island, but if he shares it with someone, he will be far less bored and twice as well armed if the worst should happen."

"That's a good way to get yourself hurt, and then killed," he says eventually. Then he waves a hand vaguely at her. "All of what you've said."

She shrugs. "Wouldn't be the first time I got hurt. Certainly won't be the last. But to protect those I love? It's worth it."

"Noble, but... a bad idea. Those kinds of ideas encourage you to be reckless when you should be biding your time. What if you saved one of your family members by sacrificing your life, only to have two other family members die because you weren't there to save them? Hard questions for a hard life."

"That's why you never make do with a single plan." The corners of her lips tug upwards toward a smirk. "My life doesn't mean much if I put everything into a single course of action. I've covered many bases in my lifetime - I just like the option of being able to cover more in the future, too."
