The season is a'changing, the weather is warmer. The forecast calls for high temperature, low humidity and a light breeze. A near perfect day. What better reason to gather the friends and have a good time with a bonfire? Grab a beer, have a seat. Cheery tunes fill the salty air. There's plenty of room and so much to eat.

Matt Murdock is actually dressed for the beach. Still likely more than usual. He burns so easily. There's no way he could have done this alone. Anyone who is anyone in Nexus knows that there is that distinct Verity Willis touch on everything. If the sounds and the sights don't get you, it is going to be whatever Clint has on the grill. That man is magic.

"It is not a very long story," Faris says, slightly apologetic.

"A tale is rarely judged by its length," Schön assures the dragon, "although if you prefer not to share it, I shan't press."

"Just start at the beginning Faris." Hunter encourages his friend, from where he is making a couple of burgers.

"Very well." The K'da sits on his haunches, so he doesn't have to crane his neck back to look up at Schön. "I was on a scout ship staffed by my peoples, and somehow found myself here in this Nexus. My kind are symbiotic, and cannot live longer than six hours away from our hosts. That time had nearly passed when I came across Hunter. Fortunately, humans are compatible with K'da needs, so he has graciously volunteered to allow me temporary shelter. We have been unable to locate the way back for me."

"Hunter is a generous soul, isn't he?" Schön muses. "Mm, finding passage onto a ship can be tricky... but I may be able to find you a doorway back to your universe, after the party."

((I should ask: do you want Faris to be able to get back to his home universe, or be stuck in the Nexus a while longer?))

Hunter returns with two burgers. He has made his with cheese, banana peppers, onions, bacon and a hint of hot sauce.

As he did not know what topping would be appropriate, he has a selection of many on the side of the plate.

"Is there a special method to find the appropriate door?" Faris questions.

((I want him to be stuck for a bit, at least. What ends up happening in the end is up to how things go with him and Hunter. :) ))

Schön accepts the plate from Hunter, glancing it over with a murmur of, "thank you, very thoughtful." To Faris, he answers, "I have a spell, which guides lost people to their destinations. Terribly useful, in a place like this."

((Right-o.))

"We don't have to do it tonight. There is a party to enjoy after all."

"Why don't you come over to my place in a few days, Schön?"

[I do have a Hunter-themed plot in mind for a new scene, if you were both interested]

Now that everyone else has food, Faris digs in to his own plate. It may be an odd combination to most, but he definitely seems to enjoy it. "A spell?" he says, tilting his head to the side slightly. "I am not familiar with this word."

((I'm game. What's the plot?))

"Certainly," the thin man replies to Hunter's suggestion. "I am at your service." To Faris, he adds, "magic? The guidance of the subtle dance of energy and reality by the sufficiently learned? It is perhaps something your people believe to occur only in the confines of myth?"

[I am starting a Witch in Darkness plotline where Hunter's magical abilities get unlocked, with the first stages due to his connection with Faris. The link is to my OOC plot bunny.]

"Do you have magic in your world, Faris?"

Faris's confusion isn't terribly lessened by Schön's explanation. "Perhaps my knowledge of your language is lacking. I believed the proper term for such things was advanced physics, or quantum physics."

Schön gives a sniff that would be difficult to call anything other than disdainful. "Not at all the same thing, I assure you."

Hunter rubs the back of his head. "I know, that I would have been blind to what magic could do... until I met someone who could use it."

"And now, I respect magic, just as much as I respect advanced physics."

Faris can tell he has offended this stranger somehow, though he can't fathom what there is to be offended about. "I apologize. I must claim ignorance of this knowledge."

"I understand," the thin man offers, mollified, "and forgive. It is easy to put a foot wrong when the ground is a mystery. Suffice to say that the terms and ideas of science make a poor fit for my Art."

[losthunter]

"It does sound like there is a lot to learn from each other."

Faris bows his head slightly, glad that his ignorance is acceptable, or at least excusable. He really doesn't know what the difference is. "We must conclude that whatever this magic is, either my part of the galaxy does not have it, or I have simply never met it."


((Sorry for the big delays. This is one of the busiest weeks of the year for me - NASCAR going on at the local racetrack so lots of car rentals, lots of overtime for me.))

"Either is possible," Schön agrees, "although I daresay you will meet with plenty while you are here."

"There are a lot of things to explore in the Nexus."

"So I am learning," Faris says with a slight nod.
