Of all the things Jim Kirk wishes he could do right now, getting good and drunk to drown his sorrows is certainly towards the top of the list. But his doctor says no, absolutely not, and never in his life has he wanted to go against doctor's orders less than he does lately.

So the captain finds himself in the Forum, unsure even what the hell to do with himself, and he gingerly eases himself down onto one of the couches, moving with the careful patience of the recently physically injured, before he notices the date on a nearby calendar.

Father's Day. Huh. How... stupidly appropriate.

"For those who've lost a parent... how the hell do you honor their memory? Even if you haven't, do you bother doing holidays like this?"

"Anywhere and everywhere. It is quite an interesting place."

"And sometimes look-alikes and alternate universe versions of people you know, from what I hear." It's occurred to him suddenly that there might be an Admiral Pike somewhere in the Nexus, and Jim doesn't have a clue what he would do if that ever turns out to be the case.

"My husband has met some of his alternates. And I met a look-alike." April nods slightly. "The time difference is a little unusual."

"I have heard of older versions of my children showing up here."

Jim frowns a little. "How weird is that? Do you have to avoid each other?" Back home, to interact with a person out of their time in a shared universe is one of the biggest no-nos you can possibly do.

"Hmmmm.... I don't know. I have never been here at the same time as one of them. So maybe..."

"I just have spoken to others, who have had conversations with the older aspects of my children."

"I'd say that might be cheating, but I had to use someone else's future knowledge on a mission before, so I guess I can't point fingers."

"Knowing the future is cheating?" She smiles.

"Legally, yeah. Messing with time travel is really tricky ground." Jim shifts a little on the couch, trying to find a more comfortable position that doesn't bother his back.

"Oh dear... would you get into trouble if you interacted with someone who had the ability to know the future?" Because if that is a possibility, April should end this conversation pretty soon.

"Not necessarily," Jim says, giving her a second glance, considering the insinuation there. "The Department of Temporal Investigations don't seem to care what I do here, though I dunno if that's because they don't know about the Nexus, or if it's because this place is so complicated. If they were watching, I'd already be in trouble for telling you I'm from the twenty-third century."

"Wow. I have never had to deal with a Department of Temporal Investigations." And that includes her work with the Justice League. She should bring it up at their next meeting. It sounds like something they might want to be aware of.

Jim shrugs carefully, slowly. "They might not be a thing outside universes with Starfleet. I don't have enough experience with other universes yet to know for sure."

"I would be interested in learning about them. It might be something that our universe might want to look at implementing."

"They run a tight ship, so I don't actually know too much. They show up whenever someone's time traveled and there's a risk they've changed things, and it's their job to set it right if it needs to be. At least, that's the theory." Jim has no idea why DTI never did anything about Ambassador Spock and Nero interfering with the timeline, but maybe they know something he doesn't. Maybe trying to fix it would only make things worse somehow.

"Very interesting."

"And you had an encounter once already?"

Jim lifts a hand and does a so-so sort of gesture, tilting his hand back and forth. "Kinda. I wasn't the one under investigation, I don't think. I had to give an interview to these really stuffy agents about how much interaction this one time traveler had with me. I never heard anything else about it."

"Well, I am glad to hear they are not investigating you due to your interactions here."

"Me too." He smiles faintly. "I've already made a few friends here." And that doesn't even count the part where he may have found somebody capable of tracking down the worst mass murderer in Federation history, a monster who haunts Jim's childhood nightmares.

"Some of my closest friends were made here in the Nexus." April laughs. "I met my husband in the Nexus."

"Oh yeah? Talk about star-crossed lovers." It's a bit sweet though, if he's honest.

"I honestly can not imagine my life without Clark in it."

Jim doesn't really know what it's like to have one true love, but he's happy for people that find someone (or someones) for them. And though he may not have someone he'd be willing to commit to in any kind of real marriage, he does know how it is to have people root themselves in your life to the point where you wondered how you ever lived without them.

"You must've been together for a good long while if you've got three kids already."

"Pretty soon, we will be marking our 10 year anniversary as a married couple. And we dated for years before getting married." The strange thing about the comment is that April doesn't look like she is any older than her mid-20s.

Jim would probably think that was odd if he wasn't used to dealing with a multitude of species that age differently than humans. And she's already dropped at least one hint that she's not your run-of-the-mill human, if not something else entirely. As it is, he only pauses for a moment to parse that. "Congratulations."

"Perhaps Clark would be interested in having a bit of an anniversary celebration. We could hold one here in the Nexus..."

"If we do... you could come. Meet my husband."
