On Traditions
There's something new in the forum of the Nexus. A few small bamboo--about average person in height-- have been placed in a corner of the forum in large pots. Sitting between the two plants is a small wooden box with several little tied and rolled papers tucked neatly into the little cubbies.
The Nexus' resident police officer is adjusting the display, intent on making it look just right. When he's got everything set up, he gives a satisfied nod.
"With the winter solstice, Christmas, and the New Year approaching, I thought it would be the best time to bring a bit of my home's celebrations here. You may hang wishes for the new year on the bamboo, or draw fortunes from the area here. What awaits you for the new year?"
((OOC: Nothing from Sumaru is what it seems. If your character believes in superstition and magic, they may find that their fortunes will have a real impact on their luck! Feel free to choose what luck your character gets, or to let me roll a random number to draw one for them. If your character doesn't believe in that sort of thing, they're still free to hang their resolutions on the bamboo. Happy Holidays folks!))

"Hey, fancypants. Where's this here tradition from? And can y'all make wishes on behalf of another? I ain't got a lot fer myself, but plenty fer my gang."

Since Jesse is already smoking, Katsuya will pull a Chinese brand of cigarettes out of his shirt pocket and give a snap of his wrist--just enough of a flame from his Persona to get the smoke lit. He'll tip the now lit cigarette Jesse's way as he breathes in.
"Certainly. I'd refrain from drawing fortunes on their behalf though. No one wants to explain to a loved one that they accidentally drew 'poor financial luck' for another person." He chuckles, and it is a joke, but this is the guy that lives in a world of magic and demons. He may be speaking truth and not even know it.

The trick with getting the cig lit with little more than a gesture gets a furtive darting of the eyes, from Katsuya's fingers to his face. It takes a few moments before the tension leaves his shoulders properly.
"That makes sense. And ain't like I can peek and cheat at this, cuz I can't read none of yer fancy script. Lessee. So I just pick one out and y'all can tell me what it says?" He starts visually skimming those fortunes, wondering which to grab!
no subject
He doesn't say 'katana' because he doesn't want to seem like he's correcting Jesse. The guy's got the idea, no sense being picky about it.
The little plain bookmarks here are for writing down wishes, and tying onto the bamboo. The scripts inside ar ehte luck fortunes. Two different things, so you can feel free to do one for yourself and the other for your loved ones."

Jesse pulls one free and pops the cap off an ink pen, already mulling over what to write. "Do I gotta be specific even? I just want 'em to have a better year than this one, is all. Hope things go better for us now that we got the Nexus an' all."
no subject
"You don't have to be specific. It's the thought that counts, right?"
no subject
He looks to Katsuya for approval, hoping he did this right. He hates the idea of messing up things from other cultures.

"This sort of thing really works in your world? The fortunes, that is." Wishes are easy enough to make come true if one works hard enough on them. ...well, some wishes, anyway. He gives Katsuya a big smile. "If it does, I'm curious to know if it could work in other worlds, too."
no subject
"Still, they do seem to have some merit to them because of the rumor magic in Sumaru." He's had more than a few bad run ins with demons as a result of a negative fortune drawing. Eesh. Sucks to have the lowest luck stat in the game.
"The little plain bookmark looking strips are basically like making new years resolutions. It's a goal or an ideal that you'd like for the coming year. I find those to be more fun than the fortunes, personally. It's nice to read what people are striving for."
no subject
"I don't suppose you've heard of them working on any other worlds?" It's not that choosing a fortune is a bad idea, but if it could affect his future... Well, best to be safe about such things. "I'm guessing they're not all good fortunes, either." It seems a natural assumption when it comes to fortune telling on any world, after all.
He smiles when Katsuya talks about reading the wishes. "Who usually gets to read all of the wishes in your world? Are they kept in a place where anyone can come read them?" It's a rather touching thought that anyone could read the hopes and dreams of someone else and maybe, just maybe, help them come true.
no subject
The wishes make the officer's smile wider.
"They're hung in public where anyone can read them. Some people sign them, others leave their wishes anonymous. But it's always touching to see them."
no subject
Of course he won't tell her where it's going, but telling her that writing out her wish will make it come true will make it easier to help her get what she's hoping for. Even if it's just another stuffed animal for her next birthday.

"I plan to hang one of my own as well."

"These fortunes... they can't possibly work." She hesitates, her expression becoming less skeptical and more curious. "Can they?"
Magic, fortunes, monsters, demons... The fact that these things are real still frightens her a bit. But perhaps if she drew a good fortune, and it came true, it wouldn't be so bad?
no subject
He gestures to the bamboo.
"If you'd rather not, you can still hang a wish for the new year. It's like a goal making. It's nice to see what other people are striving for."
no subject
But...
"No, a little good luck couldn't hurt." She manages a small smile as she nods to the cubbies. "I'll take a fortune." She never could back down from such an easy challenge.

There's a roll on the bottom that seems a little bit thicker than the others. Maybe? Is it made on finer paper? That's got to be a good fortune, right? Either way, it's awfully eye catching, somehow.

A kind gesture that was more difficult than one would think, given Sumaru. Katsuya will hand the roll back to Amelia while he sets the box aside delicately.

accostedtouched by a bit of holiday spirit himself; he's wearing gloves and boots that resemble reindeer hooves, and there's a pair of velveteen antlers perched at a jaunty angle atop his head.Looks silly with the cat ears, really.
He nods greeting to Katsuya as he steps closer, peering curiously at the blank papers. "So I just write a wish on this and hang it up?"
no subject
"Of course. You may also choose to take a fortune, if you'd like. Both common traditions from my home." Explanation over, his smile turns a bit more warm.
"It's good to see you again C'taqa."
no subject
When he hangs it on the bamboo, it reads thus: May peace come to the world, if only for a little while.
He nods satisfaction, then selects a fortune.
(He iiiiis a bit superstitious, and he's usually got fairly good luck. What've you got for him? :D)
no subject
There's a rolled strip of paper right in the middle with a sliiightly bent corner. It looks like a kitty ear. It's so eye catching! C'taqa has to have it, doesn't he? When he draws it out, he'll get a good feeling from it. A sort of warmth that starts at his fingertips.
When he unfurls it, there's a simple fortune inside.
The changing of the dates brings good fortune for relationships this year.
How nice for a social bard!

He can still grin as he tucks it into a pocket, though. "Well, that's a good one."
no subject
"I'm glad you like it. And happy to see people enjoying my world's traditions. I wish you well on the year's end celebrations, as well as the new year. I'm grateful to have had a chance to see you again before the year's end."
