There's something new in the forum of the Nexus. A few small bamboo--about average person in height-- have been placed in a corner of the forum in large pots. Sitting between the two plants is a small wooden box with several little tied and rolled papers tucked neatly into the little cubbies.

The Nexus' resident police officer is adjusting the display, intent on making it look just right. When he's got everything set up, he gives a satisfied nod.

"With the winter solstice, Christmas, and the New Year approaching, I thought it would be the best time to bring a bit of my home's celebrations here. You may hang wishes for the new year on the bamboo, or draw fortunes from the area here. What awaits you for the new year?"

((OOC: Nothing from Sumaru is what it seems. If your character believes in superstition and magic, they may find that their fortunes will have a real impact on their luck! Feel free to choose what luck your character gets, or to let me roll a random number to draw one for them. If your character doesn't believe in that sort of thing, they're still free to hang their resolutions on the bamboo. Happy Holidays folks!))

"I haven't been able to bring myself to wish for anything more selfish, really." The officer chuckles as he hangs it up alongside the others.

"I'll save a prominent spot at eey level for your daughter's wish." He promises, grinning Hughes' way.

"Does your world have any year's end celebrations?"

Hughes laughs heartily at the comment about Elicia's wish. "She'll be glad to know she's at the center of attention everywhere." Though he may keep that bit to himself. Maybe. Okay, probably not.

"There's usually something going on, yes. Fireworks in big cities, parties with friends and family - things like that." He smiles. "My wife and I like to host people in our home and stay up until all hour of the night. My daughter thinks it's a real treat to be told she doesn't have a bed time, even if she always falls asleep well before the stroke of Midnight."

"She sounds just precious." Katsuya's the sort to hold family in high esteem too, so he can't help but smile at the loving way Hughes talks about his own.

"New Year's is the most celebrated holiday where I'm from too. It's always a big family gathering.." Though, this year, it will be just himself. That's alright though. He'll manage.

"She really is. And she's getting so big! Here, look at this latest photo I took, just a week ago. Can you believe that she's already outgrown the new dress I bought her for her birthday?" Out comes a photo of Elicia as she helps her mother bake something in the kitchen. They're working at the table to make it easier on the girl, but as she kneels on her chair and leans over the table, it's obvious the effort isn't too much for her.

Hughes thinks for a moment before looking over at Katsuya with a slow grin on his face. "Say, given the time differences between here and Amestris, there's got to be some differences between here and Sumaru, right? Why don't you and I go do something? We can go to your world and then I can still be home with my family with plenty of time to spare!" How he didn't think of this before is a mystery, but if this works, it's definitely happening more often.

Rather than rolling his eyes or becoming overwhelmed, Katsuya seems pleased to look at the photos of Hughes' family. He doesn't have to live with the intelligence officer every day, admittedly, but Katsuya feels like he'd be similar, had he a family to talk about.

"It would be feasible, yes. Or, you'd be welcome to visit earlier, too. I had planned on making something for myself on the 30th."

Anyone from Amestris who knows Hughes as much as Katsuya would be impressed by the restraint - and then probably ask how they can learn it, too. Still, Hughes doesn't go on for too long, and he puts the pictures away when talk of plans gets down to the details.

"That's your birthday, right?" He smiles lightly. "Anything I could bring to make the night more memorable?" Changes of plan don't bother Hughes in the least, especially when they mean celebrating birthdays properly with his friends.

"Wh--yes." He laughs self consciously. "It is. I had planned on going somewhere until recently...but.." He shrugs. "Those plans fell through. But I still have the time off from when I planned the trip, so...Might as well enjoy it, right?"

Hughes waves a hand dismissively. "Forget those old plans - let's come up with something new together. Whatever you feel like doing, let's go for it. It's your birthday - I say we take advantage of that." Let no one ever say that Maes Hughes isn't one of the best enablers out there. He may convince you to do something you never expected to go out and do, but he'll be right there with you when you do it.
