James T. Kirk absolutely loves marketplaces.

It's not necessarily because he's looking for anything, per se, although he does often keep an eye out for interesting books to add to his collection, or maybe a bottle of some kind of exotic alcohol, or some kind of pointless alien gizmo with which to annoy Spock with its purposeless existence. No, he just loves the sheer diversity each bazaar brings to the table.

No two markets have ever been alike, in his experience. Sure, it's not quite as exciting and mysterious as exploring deep space, but it's something of a microcosm of the same, all sorts of goods and cultures thrown into close quarters, and one never knows what one might find just down the street.

His shipboard gold uniform may stand out a bit in the crowd as he meanders along, a faint smile on his face as he leans in to examine someone's wares on display, just enjoying being out and about in the fresh air.

[OOC: Retconning Jim eating bacon in this thread. Hadn't fully considered some of the elements in his backstory at the time.]

"You should pick up a PINpoint." Hunter reaches into his pocket, and pulls out his PINpoint. "Maybe you can connect it to your technology at home, some way."

"We're pretty adaptive," Jim says, frowning a little at the device. "What is it, some kind of subspace transmitter?"

"It is a combination of a communication device, with creating PINpoint access to the Nexus to your world. You can also get PINpoint addresses of other people, and enter their worlds."

He offers it to Jim to take a closer look.

"A communicator and a trans-dimensional transporter?" Jim sounds impressed, and he takes the device, looking it over. "Tell me this isn't an invention from 2017 or my chief engineer is going to absolutely shit himself."

"No." Hunter laughs. "They are only found here, in the Nexus. We don't know where they came from. Or who invented them."

His gaze snaps up from the PINpoint to look at Hunter, frowning a bit. "Wait, no one knows? Isn't that kind of... suspicious?"

"I can not say for certain that absolutely no one knows. Maybe those who do, just are not saying."

"I have had no problems with them. The Nexus gives you some benefits, for example in most areas there is an anti-violence field, and these PINpoints. But there are also dangers, like the LOLs."

"Anti-violence field? And it's not portable?" Oh, what a disappointment. There are countless times in his life where such a thing would've been ridiculously handy.

"The laughing-out-loud what nows?" he repeats, a little baffled.

"You must have not picked up a brochure." Hunter finds a few extras, located by his art supplies. Then hands on to Jim.

"Here. This may explain better."

"I did," he admits, recognizing it as the same thing he picked up near the sign. "I thought that part was a joke. But I guess I didn't believe in magic half an hour ago either, so."

"The sign. The brochures. They were placed there, by the same mysterious force who provides the anti-violence field and the PINpoints."

"The help is offered, if you wish to take it. If not, no one's feelings are hurt."

"Good, then no one will mind if I let my techs take one apart?" he asks hopefully. "They live for this sort of thing. Even if the technology can't be duplicated, it'd be enough to keep them busy for months."

"Just make sure it is someone who you can trust with the information."

"Good point," Jim has to admit. "We had a bit of a shake-up with invaders from an alternate future not too long ago, so there's a chance people might... flip out. Of course, Starfleet isn't gonna be happy with me if I don't report this, either."

He considers that, and shrugs a bit. "What the hell. I can keep a secret."

"Good. Well, for the time being, I can write down my PINpoint number for you. Then you can contact me later, when you get your own."

"That works for me," Jim agrees, flashing a grin at him. "Are you in this Nexus all the time, or do you go back home in between art shows?"

"I actually have a Nexus apartment, and my own New York apartment. My PINpoint connects the two locations."

"How does that work, with the time stopping thing?" Jim asks curiously. "If I'm on the Enterprise and I call you here, will I still be able to reach you?"

"Since I am not connected to your world, time doesn't stop when you are there, and I am here. And yes, I will receive your messages."

"Can I hope for some flirty ones?"

"That's weird, but I guess it makes sense." He'd ask more questions, but if nobody knows how most of the Nexus stuff here works, he figured Hunter probably won't know either. Well, Jim's not scared to experiment and find out first-hand how well these things function.

And he grins a little at Hunter's question. "If you want there to be."

"I do." He winks playfully.

"So, before you go, can I sell you anything?"

"Guess that depends on whether or not you take Starfleet credits as payment," Jim says, raising his eyebrows slightly. But he does take a closer look at the various art pieces on sale, to see if there's anything up his alley.

"Sure I would." Hunter shrugs his shoulders. Even if he can't find a way to use the credits as actual income, he might be able to use them for an art project.

"What is standard payment around here, anyway? I've seen a lot of barter going around, and economics isn't really my thing."

Jim pokes through the jewelry, with a particular interest in bracelets. He's not really a necklace or ring kind of guy, but he can appreciate a nice sturdy wrist cuff.

"Since there are multiple words and multiple dimensions, most people use the barter method. Trade something nice for something you want."
