Of all the things Jim Kirk wishes he could do right now, getting good and drunk to drown his sorrows is certainly towards the top of the list. But his doctor says no, absolutely not, and never in his life has he wanted to go against doctor's orders less than he does lately.

So the captain finds himself in the Forum, unsure even what the hell to do with himself, and he gingerly eases himself down onto one of the couches, moving with the careful patience of the recently physically injured, before he notices the date on a nearby calendar.

Father's Day. Huh. How... stupidly appropriate.

"For those who've lost a parent... how the hell do you honor their memory? Even if you haven't, do you bother doing holidays like this?"

He sounds so much like how Clark felt, when he first struggled with his responsibilities. April wishes she could help him.

"Life is never easy."

Jim has never once in his life had it easy. "Yeah, I know."

He shakes his head a little, not really wanting to talk about it. "What do you do for a living?"

"I am a mother." She smiles softly. "I stay home with the children. They are still too young to be left on their own."

"And I paint and fashion design from the home."

"Doesn't stop some moms," Jim says. He speaks from personal experience; his own mother was rarely home throughout his childhood, leaving her two boys in the hands of a babysitter - or worse, her second husband, Frank.

Jim has never known much about art until he met Hunter here, and he can't help but be a little interested. It's a nice distraction from his woes, anyway. "You look like you like it."

"My husband works full-time, so I prefer being at home with the children." April shrugs like it should be no big deal.

"I love it. It keeps me busy."

She smiles. "I should introduce myself. I'm April Kent."

"Jim Kirk," he introduces himself. So far, most people here have been okay with handshakes, so he extends his hand towards her, careful not to aggravate his back. "Nice to meet you."

April takes a moment to disconnect herself from her abilities slightly, so she doesn't pick up too much of his pain, when she returns the handshake.

"Is it your first time in the Nexus?"

"Third time, but it's been a few weeks," he answers. "I've been in the hospital for a while and they don't like it when patients disappear to other dimensions."

"Those hospital stays are always difficult. I had to be on bed rest for quite some time, after the birth of our third child."

"How long before the doctors cut you loose?"

"About a week or so..."

"Lucky." Jim smiles faintly. "I'm not a big fan of hospitals. I'd say doctors too, but my best friend is my Chief Medical Officer, so that doesn't work."

"I have a faster rebound time than most other people might." April shrugs her shoulders slightly.

Well, that's a hint if he ever heard one. But it's generally rude to ask people what they are, so he doesn't. Besides, there are more relevant questions to ask, and since she's obviously been here before, this one shouldn't sound too weird. "What year are you from?"

April blinks for a moment. "Right now... I live in a dimension that is early 21st Century."

It is the best answer to give him. Because her birth dimension is on a different timeline than the one she lives in. And she knows that there are older versions of her children who visit the Nexus from a different timeline.

More twenty-first century people. "Seems that's pretty common around here," he says, wondering why that is. "It's 2259 back home, but I haven't met anybody from my century here yet."

"I am sure you will. Eventually."

"Probably," he agrees. "If this place is as infinite as they say, there's someone from anywhere around here."

"Anywhere and everywhere. It is quite an interesting place."

"And sometimes look-alikes and alternate universe versions of people you know, from what I hear." It's occurred to him suddenly that there might be an Admiral Pike somewhere in the Nexus, and Jim doesn't have a clue what he would do if that ever turns out to be the case.

"My husband has met some of his alternates. And I met a look-alike." April nods slightly. "The time difference is a little unusual."

"I have heard of older versions of my children showing up here."

Jim frowns a little. "How weird is that? Do you have to avoid each other?" Back home, to interact with a person out of their time in a shared universe is one of the biggest no-nos you can possibly do.

"Hmmmm.... I don't know. I have never been here at the same time as one of them. So maybe..."

"I just have spoken to others, who have had conversations with the older aspects of my children."

"I'd say that might be cheating, but I had to use someone else's future knowledge on a mission before, so I guess I can't point fingers."

"Knowing the future is cheating?" She smiles.
