made waves with some friends I know

The season is a'changing, the weather is warmer. The forecast calls for high temperature, low humidity and a light breeze. A near perfect day. What better reason to gather the friends and have a good time with a bonfire? Grab a beer, have a seat. Cheery tunes fill the salty air. There's plenty of room and so much to eat.

Matt Murdock is actually dressed for the beach. Still likely more than usual. He burns so easily. There's no way he could have done this alone. Anyone who is anyone in Nexus knows that there is that distinct Verity Willis touch on everything. If the sounds and the sights don't get you, it is going to be whatever Clint has on the grill. That man is magic.

In years? Then this is overdue. This would be Matt Murdock's first effort at putting one together. So this is a particularly lucky day! No cane, no pretense and just himself. Matt hears, and smells, a new person. All the sunblock. So he's also a guy that needs it.

"Hello there."

"Hello back." Hunter smiles. It is good timing, since he just finished applying some sunscreen and could stand to face the other man.

"All of this is great!"

If he needs the help there are able parties around. "It is, isn't it?" And it's entirely meant with the same degree of surprise, no ego in it whatsoever.

"Matt Murdock," he offers his hand out to shake. It's okay if there's sunblock on it. God knows he's pale and will need some more at some point.

"Hunter." There is no last name provided, since Hunter has rejected his former last name. But he accepts the hand-shake. Hunter's hands are strong, with long artistic fingers. And at least if there is sunblock passed, there is no paint this time around.

"You are Verity's boyfriend. It is nice to finally meet you."

He's known a person by a preferred single name. They won't be the last. He accepts it automatically. Matt's own handshake is a solid one, rough hands of a fighter but with a smooth, diplomatic finish of a lawyer. How about that.

Just her name lights up his face. "Yes, hah. I am." And it's something he won't ever get sick of hearing. "She's--she's terrific."

Hunter has seen that similar light-up effect on Verity's face, when she talks about Matt. It makes him smile even more to see it now, on Matt's face.

"Terrific is just the tip of the iceberg." Hunter responds with affection in his voice. But no need to worry Matt, since Hunter would rather check you out... well, okay, maybe worry a little.

"She told me a little about your lawyer work. It sounds incredible."

Let people say they're in love. Well, they are. And all he has to go on is her reactions. To hear other people talk about her, and it has always been positively, it brightens his mood even more.

"I wasn't sure if you were ready for the list or not, but yes. She is many things to me." It doesn't cross his mind that he has a pleasing appearance. Appearances in general are now and again a thought he considers last.

Incredible. Matt tilts his head to the side. "Thank you, I'm only a part of the whole. Nelson and Murdock is entirely a group effort."

Hunter is much more likely to judge others by their personality these days, over a pleasing appearance. And when he crushes on someone, it has more to do with personality over appearance.

"The work of your team sounds incredible," Hunter amends his statement. "I was living on the streets for a few months, before I was able to improve my situation."

He is tempted to explain about his little project, since he thinks it is something that Matt and his team would appreciate. But then Hunter decides that today is a day for fun, not to talk about work or projects.

"I haven't been to the beach in ages. And of course the food smells great."

The fine nuances of character are what draw a person to a person in the end. Visual attraction is deceptive. Matt can surmise more about people with other means. It is not an easy practice otherwise. How did everything and everyone become about smoke and mirrors?

"Thank you, we...we really try." And Hunter might not know how much it makes him beam with pride at the words. "I can't imagine how that might have been for you. I'm glad you've come to a better place." He means it. God does he mean it. Cities are beating hearts and that doesn't always make them gentle or kind. Anything to help a person because it becomes a cause that involves many. He'd love to get on anything that is about community.

"It's been some time for me too. You really have to try what Clint has on the fire. Like...everything is amazing." Even the rabbit food he's trying to undersell.

"That's Clint over there? I will have to stop by and say hi." This is a great opportunity for Hunter to meet more of the people who he has heard about.

"It is so nice and bright. It is a good thing for sunscreen. Nothing worse for a bald man to get a sunburn on their head."

"No matter what he says, the mushrooms are worth eating. Tofu burgers too." What a pleasant, fluid nature of relations are going on here.

"Maybe someone has a spare hat. That does sound unpleasant."

"A dedicated meat-a-tarian?" Hunter plays with his words slightly. "That is good to know. I am open to eat anything on the menu."

"And I never thought about a hat." Hunter really doesn't own any hats now he thinks about it. Most times in the past, he used a good to hide his face.

"Or at least a traditional grillmeister? Maybe both. I'll have to ask." Because Matt is a big eater. He'll be back there a few more times.

"I have a friend coming later, I could see if he can bring you something if you want. I mean, SPF should be enough."

"I use the highest SPF possible. Not only do I have the bald head to think about, but I also have close to a full-body tattoo." Taking with Matt reminds Hunter fondly of his conversations with Will, his former tutor who was blind (and can now see due to magic).

"Oh, I can see that would require a lot more than the typical." And Matt himself is clearly not a sun-worshiper. "We have some to spare too now that I think about it. You're in good company, Hunter."

"Definitely agree with that... very good company." After all, Hunter feels blessed to have met the people he has, since everyone has been so nice so far.

"I am glad that we have this opportunity to socialize."

"Yes, I just..." have been trying to find a good balance between defending a city neighborhood and run a business. That never sounds good out loud. "Sometimes you get so busy you have to really make time for the things that matter." Like friends and places where you can just be yourself and breathe.

"Can I get you a beer?"

"I can understand that." Hunter does not have two lives to balance, but he does get lost in his art at times.

"A beer sounds great."

"Any preference? We got plenty to choose from." Because being thoughtful hosts provide variety.

"Any recommendations? I am pretty open minded."

"We have Arrogant Bastard, Guinness, Dos Equis, Heineken...if you wait long enough a friend is coming by with Magic Hat." That would be Mr. Foggy Nelson bringing a favorite. Matt right now is nursing a Heineken.

"Guinness or Heineken would be excellent. But I will have to try Magic Hat, when there is some available."

"I gotcha. Yeah, it's pretty damn good once you try it. Gimme a second." He did say he'd get it. So off he goes. In Nexus Matt operates without the dependence on a cane. No vigilantism means no need to hide.

Hunter will get out his sketch pad as he waits. He makes a couple of quick strokes of his pen, to capture a sketch of Matt. This is how Hunter works... he sketches out a quick portrait and then later, if he is inspired, he will use that sketch for a painting or something more special.

And if he knew that Matt didn't have to hide in the Nexus... he would approve.

It doesn't take long at all. He is back shortly. The glasses stay on for the sun and because Matt feels more comfortable with them on. Just how it goes. Two Heinekens now. A fresh one for himself and another for Hunter. He takes a seat in the sand. "I play favorites, what can I say?"
